To be eligible for a Governor's Scholars Award or a Governor's Distinguished Mathematics and Science Scholars Award ("Governor's Math and Science Award") students must have:

  • Been enrolled in a California public school for at least twelve continuous months immediately prior to taking the authorized exam. For example, if an exam was taken on May 1, 2001, the student must have been enrolled continuously from May 1, 2000. • Earned all qualifying scores on the authorized exam(s) before December 31, 2002.

AUTHORIZED EXAMS AND QUALIFYING SCORE INFORMATION

Governor's Scholars Award ($1,000)

A Governor's Scholars Award may be earned in 9th, 10th and/or 11th grades. A student must have taken all the authorized exams listed below and earned scores in: the top five percent of public school students in their grade level, or the top ten percent of students in their grade level at their public, junior high or comprehensive high school. For the year 2002, the State Board of Education adopted the authorized exams listed below.

Authorized Exams for 2002
  • Stanford 9 Reading
  • Stanford 9 Mathematics
  • California English Language Arts Standards Test

The scores will be calculated by combining the total normalized curve equivalent Stanford 9 Reading and Stanford 9 Mathematics scores.

Governor's Math and Science Award ($2,500)

Students who earned a Governor's Scholars Award and also earned qualifying scores on certain math and science exams prior to December 31, 2002 may be eligible to claim an additional $2,500 Governor's Math and Science Award.

Qualifying scores must have been earned on:

  • one authorized math exam, and
  • one authorized science exam

Additionally, students must have claimed a Governor's Scholars Award before claiming their Governor's Math and Science Award. Students may have earned qualifying scores in any sequence.

For example, a student could earn a qualifying science score in 9th grade, earn a qualifying math score in 10th grade and earn a Governor's Scholars Award in 11th grade. The Governor's Scholars Award must be claimed first.

See the chart below for specific authorized exams and qualifying scores.

Authorized Math and Science Exams and Qualifying Scores

  • Score was earned before December 31, 2001, and;
  • If the student's school did not offer either AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC course, the student may substitute a High Honors (6) score earned on the GSE High School Math exams and/or;
  • If the student's school did not offer AP Biology, Chemistry, Physics B or Physics C course, the student may substitute a High Honors (6) earned on either the GSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Second-Year Coordinated Science exams.
